Hello From Sicily - An Italian Cooking Class

I had thoroughly enjoyed my personal Sicilian history lesson provided by Alessandro Adorno, the Founder and Director of the Babilonia Language School. In addition he suggested that I attend one of the cooking classes organized by Babilonia that gives Italian language students an opportunity to create Sicilian delicacies first-hand.

Just a minute and a half from the language school is the home of Aurelio and Angela ferrari, a couple who regularly host language students as part of the homestay program of Babilonia. Currently the couple have three language students staying with them, and they provide them with comfortable accommodation as well as three home-cooked meals a day.

Aurelio, now retired, has spent a life-time in the hospitality industry. He has lived and worked in different hotels and resorts in Rome, France and England and has held a wide variety of positions in the tourism business, including work in various hotel and restaurant kitchens and has gained a wide variety of operational and managerial experience. After all the years abroad during his international career he returned to live in Taormina, in the house where he was born. He said he loves living here, its beautiful, and its very safe since there is virtually no crime.

He explained that he loves Sicilian cooking and that he truly enjoys sharing his knowledge. Lessons are taught three times a week and they focus on Sicilian home-cooking, using all the fresh locally grown ingredients that this fertile island has to offer.

Today Aurelio and his two culinary charges, Marjolein from Holland and Takashi from Japan, were going to produce a wide assortment of Sicilian specialties:

- Pasta alla Eoliana
- Pesce all Messinese
- Pomodori Gratini on Crostini
- Caponata Siciliana stile Arabo
- Aciughe marinate
- Formaggio Fritto
- Insalata di menta con olivi
- Mele al Agrodolce

As you can imagine a proper Sicilian meal always consists of multiple courses, and after all the preparation the students, the master chef and his family get to enjoy the meal together. Aurelio, a real character, added that students often sing, or play the guitar or the piano which is located on the main floor of his four storey house. He also added that he always makes sure to ask his students whether they have any food preferences or allergies or whether they are vegetarian.

Tonight was going to be a real feast for the palate with two main dishes: Pesce alla Messinese, a local fish specialty, and Pasta alla Eoliana pasta Eolian Islands style. Both dishes require a basic sauce made from tomatoes and eggplants, flavoured with local staples such as onion, garlic, olives, capers, mint, basil and oregano. Aurelio refers to these herbs as the profumi di Sicilia the fragrances or aromas of Sicily. The fish, cut in rectangular pieces, is cooked for only 10 minutes on the stove inside the sauce to make sure its nice and tender. To round out the taste a bit of red wine is added to the sauce at the end.

Pasta alla Eoliana starts with the same base and Aurelio explained that the pasta that is added is called spacciatella, a type of pasta that is not normally available in supermarkets. Any type of longitudinal hollow pasta should be able to substitute for this pasta variety.

Several aromatic side dishes were to accompany our meal: Pomodori Gratinati (gratinated tomatoes), according to Aurelio, are a great way to use up old bread. You simply cut a breadstick into slices, create a mixture called pane saporito breadcrumbs flavoured with parsley, garlic, salt, all mixed thoroughly in a blender, and spoon the mixture on top of the tomatoes and add pecorino and parmesan, topped off with some anchovies, and bake the small pieces of bread in the oven for ten or eleven minutes to arrive at a delicious side dish.

Sicilys multicultural heritage manifested itself in the next dish: the Caponata Siciliana Stile Arabo a sweet and sour culinary relic of the Arab period in Sicilian history. The ingredients for this dish include raisins, pine nuts, sugar, balsamic vinegar, onions and eggplants cut in small cubes, all of which come together to form a deliciously fragrant vegetable relish that makes for a flavourful slightly sweet addition to any meal.

Aurelio and his two enthusiastic cooking students continued with the next side dish: Acciughe marinate are anchovy slices that are marinated for at least two hours in vinegar, lemon and salt with an addition of hot peppers, parsley and oil.

For the cheese lovers among us Aurelio prepared formaggio fritto: ricotta slices, breaded in beaten egg and flour and then pan-fried on the stove top. With the leftover egg he created an omlette, adding that nothing ever goes to waste in a Sicilian kitchen.

A mint salad consisting of mint leaves, with an addition of "pane saporito" (the savoury breadcrumb mix), olives, oil and vinegar was next before our chef and his two assistants created the dessert: Mele al agrodolce: sweet and sour apples. For this dish apple slices were covered with lemon juice and sugar and topped with sweet prunes, a sweet and sour way to cap off an assortment of healthy dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients. Sicilian cuisine is very healthful, with lots of fish and vegetables and very little animal fat. Aurelios eight-course meal was a perfect example of the focus on simple yet flavourful local ingredients that come together to form a fascinating array of aromas.

After the meal was cooked we all carried the numerous containers two floors up to the covered rooftop terrace which featured a long table that could hold at least 10 to 12 people. Aurelio, always with a big smile on his face, graciously introduced all the dishes on camera, and all of us sat down to taste this smorgasbord of Sicilian cooking.

Aurelio and his wife Angela talked to us about their families and about life in Sicily, which they both greatly enjoyed. The entire evening and the cooking class was conducted in Italian, another opportunity for exposure to the Italian language and the cordial hospitality of a real Italian family. After a delicious dinner Marjolein and I left this wonderful get-together and stepped out into a warm, moonlit night. We spent a few minutes on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and both commented what a special experience this time in Taormina.

Right Brain, Left Brain

The right brain controls the left side of the body and the left brain controls the right side of the body. The right brain is the more creative or emotional hemisphere and the left brain is the analytical and judgmental hemisphere. Anything that is new or not familiar to an individual is right brain dominant. Anything that is familiar is left brain dominant.

Along nipples with right and left brain there are different parts of the brain. The frontal lobe controls your personality, the temporal lobe deals with short and long nipples term memory, the parietal lobe is the lobe of the hand, and the occipital lobe, the very back part of the head, controls vision.

There are specific activities that may stimulate the right or left brain.

Activities that stimulate the left brain are solving crossword or word search puzzles, performance of learned tasks, language usage, both comprehensive and expressive, analytical information, problem solving, and recalling new information. Geometric or spatial memory, hand gestures, writing one's name, classifications of pictures or words into categories, recalling complex narratives, recognizing someone you have met, and name recognition are also all left brain activities.

Activities that stimulate the right brain are emotional issues, the creative process, recalling memorized lists, any unfamiliar event or activity, and holding the attention span. Seeing or feeling different sizes, seeing different colors, attention exercises involving timing, seeing unfamiliar faces, and meeting someone new also stimulate the right brain..

You are not dead until your brain is dead. Your brain needs two things to survive: fuel and activation. Fuel comes in the form of oxygen and glucose. Glucose comes from the food you eat, and oxygen comes from the air you breathe. The normal inspiration/expiration ratio should be exhalation twice as long nipples as inhalation. That is to say - breathe out twice as long nipples as you breathe in.

There are also specific treatment modalities that a clinician may utilize to increase function or activation of the right or left brain. One example is big letters made up of small letters. If you look at the small letters you will fire right cerebellum to left brain. If you look at the big letters you will fire left cerebellum to right brain.

Auditory stimulation (listening to nature sounds, clicks of a metronome, or Mozart in a major key) in the left ear comes up through the brain stem over to the right brain and vice versa for the right ear.

Visual stimulation from the left side in a checkerboard pattern using different colors comes up through the optic pathway to the brain stem and up to the right brain. The T.E.N.S. unit set at subthreshold stimulates large diameter nerves which fire up to the cerebellum and to the opposite brain.

Flowering Cherries

Flowering cherries

While the briefness of their glory has to be acknowledged, cherries really are the hardy spring-flowering trees for temperate climate gardens. I can think of no others, apart from their close Prunus relatives and some of the magnolias that even come close to rivalling flowering cherries for sheer weight of bloom and vibrance of colour.

The genus Prunus, to which the cherries, plums, almonds, apricots and peaches belong, includes around 430 species spread over much of the northern temperate regions and has a toehold in South America. Although including a few evergreen species, such as the well-known cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), the genus is mainly deciduous and generally hardy to the frosts likely to occur in most New Zealand gardens.

The genus Prunus is widely recognised as being divided into 5 or 6 subgenera, though some botanists prefer to recognise these as distinct genera. The subgenus cerasus is the one to which the cherries belong. This group includes a wide variety of species, many of which are not highly ornamental. The species which are of most interest to gardeners are the Chinese and Japanese cherries, not only because they tend to be the most attractive, but also because they tend to be reasonably compact, often have attractive autumn foliage as well as spring flowers and because centuries of development in oriental gardens have produced countless beautiful cultivars.

The Japanese recognise two main groups of flowering cherries: the mountain cherries or yamazakura and the temple or garden cherries, the satozakura. The mountain cherries, which tend to have simple flowers, are largely derived from the original Mountain Cherry (Prunus serrulata var. spontanea), Prunus subhirtella and Prunus incisa. They are mainly cultivated for their early-blooming habit, which is just as well because their rather delicate display would be overwhelmed by the flamboyance of the garden cherries.

The garden cherries are the result of much hybridisation, mostly unrecorded, so we can't be exactly sure of their origins. Prunus serrulata (in its lowland form) and Prunus subhirtella also feature largely in their background. The other major influences are Prunus sargentii, Prunus speciosa, Prunus apetala and possibly the widespread Bird Cherries (Prunus avium and Prunus padus). The result of these old hybrids and modern developments is the wealth of forms that burst into bloom in our gardens every spring.

Regretfully, that complex parentage and those centuries of development and countless cultivars combined with Western misunderstandings of Japanese names and multiple introductions of the same plants under different names has led to considerable confusion with the names of flowering cherries.

Most of the popular garden plants are lumped together under three general headings:

1. Prunus subhirtella cultivars and hybrids;

2. Sato-zakura hybrids;

3. Hybrids no longer listed under parent species, being instead regarded as just to difficult to classify in that way.

But however you view them, flowering cherries have so much to offer that a little confusion over naming and identification shouldn't stand in the way of your including them in your garden. And now that many of them are available as container-grown plants that can be bought in flower, it's really just a matter of choosing the flowers you like.

Nevertheless, it's nice to know exactly which plant you're dealing with, so that you can be sure of its performance and size. While most of the larger nurseries and garden centres take care to supply plants that are true to type, make sure on first flowering that your cherries match their label descriptions. Misidentification, or perhaps misrepresentation, is common.

Plants

Prunus subhirtella cultivars and hybrids

Although the flowers of Prunus subhirtella are usually small and fairly simple, they appear from early winter well into spring, depending on the cultivar. Not only that, the cultivars themselves are long-flowering, often being in bloom for three weeks to a month. There are many cultivars, but most are similar to, or forms of the two main types listed below.

'Autumnalis' ( 'Jugatsu Sakura')

This is the most reliable winter-flowering form. It often starts to bloom in late April to early May and can carry flowers right through until mid September. It seldom produces a massive burst of bloom, rather sporadic clusters of flowers. This is just as well because the flowers are damaged by heavy frosts. The flowers of 'Autumnalis' are white to pale pink opening from pink buds; those of 'Autumnalis Rosea' are the same but with a deep pink centre.

'Pendula' ('Ito Sakura')

Prunus autumnalis tends to have weeping branches and 'Pendula' is a cultivar that emphasises this feature. Its flowers are usually pale pink and open in late winter to early spring. 'Falling Snow' is a cultivar with pure white flowers, while those of 'Rosea' are deep pink.

Sato-zakura hybrids

'Fugenzo' ( 'Shirofugen' )

'Fugenzo' was one of the first, if not the first, Japanese cherry to be grown in European gardens. It 's origins can be traced back to at least the 15th century. Its flowers are white to very pale pink, opening from pink buds, and when fully open how two conspicuous green leaf-like pistils in the centre of the flower.

'Taihaku'

'Taihaku' , also known as the great white cherry, has white flowers up to 5cm across. It grows to at least 8m tall with a wider spread and its flowers open at the same time as its bronze foliage expands, making a pleasant contrast. Thought to have been lost to cultivation, this cultivar was identified in Sussex garden from an old Japanese print.

'Ukon'

Although 'Ukon' mean yellowish, this cultivar has very distinctive pale green flowers and is one of the few unmistakable cherries. Its foliage develops purplish tones in autumn. The unusual flower colour contrasts well with the likes of 'Sekiyama'.

'Amanogawa' ('Erecta')

'Amanogawa' grows to around 6m tall, but only around 1.5m wide, and has pale pink single flowers with a freesia-like scent. It blooms in mid-spring and in autumn the foliage develops striking yellow and red tones.

'Shogetsu' ('Shugetsu', 'Shimidsu-zakura')

'Shogetsu' flowers late and produces pendant clusters of white, double flowers that open from pink buds. The flower clusters are up to 15cm long, which makes a tree in full bloom an arresting sight, especially considering that 'Shogetsu' is not a large tree and that its weeping habit means it can be covered in bloom right down to the ground.

'Sekiyama' ('Kanzan')

Certainly among the most popular cherries and most often sold under the name 'Kanzan', 'Sekiyama' has a relatively narrow, upright growth habit when young but eventually develops into a spreading 12m tall tree. Its flowers, which are pink and very fully double, are carried in pendulous clusters of five blooms. They open from reddish-pink buds. The foliage has a slight red tint.

'Ariake' ('Dawn', 'Candida')

This cultivar grows to about 6m tall and flowers in spring as the foliage develops. The young leaves are a deep bronze shade that contrasts well with white to very pale pink flowers.

'Kiku-shidare' ('Shidare Sakura')

'Kiku-shidare' is similar in flower to 'Sekiyama', but it has a weeping growth habit. It is a small tree and is often smothered in bloom from the topmost branches down to near ground level. The flowers can each have up to 50 petals.

'Pink Perfection'

'Pink Perfection' was introduced in 1935 by the famous English nursery Waterer Sonsand Crisp. It is a probable 'Sekiyama' 'Shogetsu' hybrid and has flowers that show characteristics of both parents; the clustered blooms of 'Shogetsu' and the pink of 'Sekiyama'. The flowers are very fully double and the young foliage is coppery.

'Kofugen'

'Kofugen' has graceful semi-weeping branches and a fairly compact growth habit. Its flowers are not really single but semi-double, though the two whorls of petals are flat rather than ruffled, so the effect is not that easy to see.

'Shirotae' ('Mt. Fuji')

This beautiful tree has a spreading growth habit that in the best specimens shows distinctly tiered branches. Its flowers, which are white and semi-double on mature plants, start to open before the foliage expands. They are pleasantly scented.

'Takasago'

Although possibly a Prunus sieboldii cultivar, 'Takasago' is now more widely listed under the satozakura cherries. It bears clusters of semi-double pink flowers with bronze-red new foliage.

'Ojochin' ('Senriko')

This tree, rather squat when young, but eventually 7m tall bears single white flowers in such profusion as to give the impression of double blooms. Opening from pink buds, the flowers are up to 5cm in diameter and among the later to bloom. 'Ojochin' means large lantern, which aptly describes the shape of the flowers.

Other hybrids, species and their cultivars

'Accolade'

One of the most popular of all garden cherries, 'Accolade' is a Prunus sargentii Prunus subhirtella hybrid that develops into a flat-topped small tree. In spring it is smothered in pendulous clusters of large, bright pink, semi-double flowers.

Yoshino cherry (Prunus yedoensis)

Well-known as an avenue tree, this Prunus subhirtella Prunus speciosa hybrid is smothered in white to very pale pink blooms in spring before or as the new leaves develop. When the flowers are spent they form drifts of fallen petals around the base of the tree. There are several cultivars, such as the pink-flowered 'Akebono', the pale pink 'Awanui' and a weeping form ('Shidare Yoshino' or 'Pendula').

Taiwan cherry (Prunus campanulata)

The Taiwan cherry is valued for its early-flowering habit and fiery autumn foliage. The flowers, which are usually a vivid deep pink, are heavy with nectar and very popular with birds. Taiwan cherry is rather frost tender, though once established it grows well in most coastal areas.

'Okame'

Introduced in 1947 by the British authority Collingwood Ingram, 'Okame' is a hybrid between the Taiwan cherry and the Fuji cherry (Prunus incisa). It is usually quite hardy, though this appears to be variable, and it flowers heavily in early spring. The blooms open in late winter to early spring before the foliage develops and are a bright soft pink. 'Pink Cloud' is a similar though more compact cherry raised by Felix Jury.

Himalayan hill cherry (Prunus cerasoides)

This species is rather frost tender, especially when young, but is a beautiful tree where it grows well. Not only does it produce pink flowers in winter, when little else is in bloom, it has attractive banded bark and the unusual habit of shedding its foliage in late summer then producing new leaves before winter. The variety rubea has deeper pink flowers in spring.

Cyclamen cherry (Prunus cyclamina)

Flowering on bare stems in early spring, the cyclamen cherry is a hardy small to medium-sized tree from central China. The flowers, which are rose pink, are followed by bronze new growth that retains its colour for some weeks before greening. The leaves fall late in autumn and often colour well.

Sargent's cherry (Prunus sargentii)

This large and very hardy Japanese species is probably best known as one of the parents of the very popular hybrid 'Accolade'. It can grow to as much as 18m tall and will withstand at least -25C. Its 3 to4cm wide, bright pink flowers are complemented by red-brown bark.

Kurile cherry (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis)

Usually little more than a large shrub, this Japanese cherry can reach 6m tall under ideal conditions. The flowers, which are soft pink and open from early spring, are backed by red sepals that hang on for a while after the flowers have fallen, thus prolonging the spring colour.

Prunus sieboldii

This hybrid has given rise to several popular cultivars. The original cross is a slow-growing small tree with semi-double 3 to 4.5cm wide flowers in spring. The new stems are often very glossy.

Cultivation

Flowering cherries are largely undemanding plants that thrive in almost any well-drained soil. For the best display of flowers they need to see at least half-day sun and if sheltered from the wind, the blooms and the autumn foliage will last far longer than if exposed to the full blast of the elements.

Cherries are often seen growing as lawn specimens, but they can be planted in shrubberies, borders or small groves. By choosing a selection that flowers in succession, it's possible to have bloom frommid-winter to early summer.

Cherries are natural companions for azaleas and rhododendrons, and can be used to beautiful effect as shade trees for the smaller varieties of these or to shelter a Karups Private Collection of woodland perennials such as primroses and hostas. Japanese maples also blend well with cherries and they can combine to make a brilliant display of autumn foliage.

Pruning

Flowering cherries seldom need major pruning once established. Young trees can be lightly trimmed to develop a pleasing shape and mature plant may be kept compact by tipping the branches, otherwise just remove any vigorous water shoots and suckers that sprout from the rootstock. Make sure that any pruning is done in summer to prevent infecting the trees with silver leaf fungus (Chondrostereum purpureum). Although this disease is present throughout the year, cherries are most resistant to it in summer.

Pests and diseases

Apart from the already mentioned silver leaf, there isn't really very much that goes wrong with flowering cherries that can't be tolerated. Sawfly larvae (peach or pear slug) sometimes cause damage to the foliage, and older plants sometimes suffer from dieback in their older branches, but these are seldom serious problems. The dieback is sometimes the result of Armillaria, so it may be advisable to insert some of the now readily available Trichoderma dowels into the trunks of any older cherries to prevent the problem developing.

Propagation

Virtually all of the fancier flowering cherries sold for garden use are budded or grafted, usually onto Prunus avium stocks. Although few home gardeners attempt them, these processes are not difficult. Budding especially, is straightforward and is carried out in exactly the same way as budding roses.

Species, including the standard Prunus avium stock, can be raised from seed or from softwood cuttings taken in spring or early summer. The seed should be removed from the fruit by soaking for few days until all the flesh has fallen away. It is usually best to simulate winter conditions by chilling the seed for a few weeks before sowing.

Graft height

When buying flowering cherries you may be faced with a choice of graft height. Which you choose largely depends on the cultivar and the type of growth best suited to your garden. With weeping cherries choose the highest graft possible (usually 8ft [2.4m]), to allow the maximum length of flowering branch. Upright cultivars like 'Sekiyama' are best grafted near ground level so that their erect habit has a chance to develop properly, while graft height in not that important with bushier trees.

The important thing to remember, particularly with high grafted plants, is that the main stem will not gain much height from the grafting point. The stems of a weeping cultivar may grow up before arching down, thus adding some height, but if you choose too low a graft that won' t make much difference. Low-grafted weeping cherries are, however, ideal for large tubs where they can be kept trimmed to shrub-like proportions.

Tarp Shelters For Ultralight Backpackers

Why use tarp shelters? The biggest reason ultralight backpackers use them is to reduce pack weight. The lightest tent you can find will be close to three pounds. Some of the newest ultralight tarps weigh just seven ounces.

Weight isn't the only advantage of tarp shelters, though. They also give you room to move, and you can easily look around. You can quickly take them down when you're ready to go. If it's wet, just shake it off and it will fit in an outside pocket of your backpack. Even if they were the same weight, I'd still prefer a tarp over a tent for most trips.

The lightest of my own tarp shelters weighs 16 ounces with all the strings. That seems heavy now, when I look at the new ultralight tarps out there. Integral Designs Sil Tarp 5' x 8', for example, weighs just 7 ounces.

The Bozeman Mountain Works Stealth 0 Catenary Ridgeline Ulralight Backpacking Tarp weighs an amazing 5.7 ounces. With a name like that, you know it has to be expensive. Of course, almost any backpacking tarp will be lighter - and cheaper - than the lightest tents out there.

How To Use Tarp Shelters

You'll probably need a bigger tarp than you think. A seven-foot roof may seem like it will cover your six-foot body well enough, until a blowing rain soaks your feet. Proper use is even more important than size, though.

Pitch the low side into the wind. Keep all sides low if a storm is coming. Evenly tighten guy lines. Use rocks, trees, trekking poles and whatever else helps. Pitch the tarp tightly, to keep it from flapping in the wind too much, which can loosen the strings or cause the tarp to tear.

If you haven't used tarp shelters before, experiment until you can quickly set up in several different enviroments. Bring lightweight stakes, until you learn how to use sticks and trees and rocks. No stakes means less weight to carry. I've always found something to use, even up high on the tundra.

You might have to treat the seams with a sealant occasionally, or at least when you first buy your tarp. Buy seam-sealer anyplace that sells tarps and tents. You'll need string or cord of some sort for tie-downs. I put varying lengths around the tarp, so I can untie and use the long puffy nipples ones where I need them. Sometimes that tree will be a little too far away.

I use 4' by 7' pieces of plastic for groundsheets. They're opened-up giant garbage bags that weigh 2 ounces. They're disposable, but I've used one for a week in the Rockies, and they're cheap and easy to replace. Whatever you use, lay your bag on it, to be sure you'll have room. You don't want to be touching the wet ground just because you moved a little. On the other hand, if it's too big it will catch rain out near the edge of the tarp, and funnel it back to you.

Mosquitos keep a lot of ultralight backpackers from using tarp shelters. Repellant is a partial solution, as is using the tarp only when it isn't too buggy. A headnet helps, but keeping the rest of your body covered when it's warm isn't pleasant. Pitch camp in a high, breezy place and you'll have fewer bug problems.

There are also mesh shelters you can pitch under your tarp. The lightest I've seen weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces. With a 7-ounce tarp, you'd be under 2 pounds for a shelter, and it comes with a floor, so you don't have to bring a groundsheet. Ultralight tarps and tarp shelters, by the way, weigh less than 20 ounces, a standard I just invented, but it seems reasonable.

Control your Outlook Inbox, Once and For All

When you open Microsoft Outlook, what do you see?

How many messages do you have? Do you have to scroll down to view all of them? Are many of them unread? Does just the thought of them all overwhelm you?

Some of my clients tell me that they feel paralysed at the thought of their inbox bursting at its seams.

Your inbox is not a place to hold all your mail just like your physical mailbox outside your house doesnt keep all the letters, accounts and junk mail youve ever received.

When I check my mailbox every day, I dont bring all the mail in, read through it all and take it right back outside to put back inside the mail box. Do you?

Then why do we do that with our computer inbox?

Its because we dont want to make decisions and because we dont have a system.

E-clutter happens when you open an email, cant decide what to do about it and so you close it again. And there it sits waiting for you

When I see 1427 and 1658 emails in clients inboxes, first I start twitching and then I ask why they torture themselves like this. The reply I always get is they want to cover themselves. Sound familiar?

I have a solution that is quick and easy for you.

Make a new folder, call it @todays date (where todays date is the actual date, e.g. ), drag everything into that folder and start afresh. Now if you need an email from there, click Find on your menu bar and use the search function to track the email.

Take charge tip if you know who sent it, double-click on that persons name in your Contacts, click on Activities, wait just a second and Outlook will list all emails with their exact location. Try it you will LOVE it.

Then after that, create these 7 new habits:

1. Set a goal

Decide to have an inbox with no more than 20 (or whatever your comfort number is) items at any one time. Play a game with yourself and make a point of deleting a certain number of items daily. These can be from your inbox, sent items, folders, etc.

2. Set times during the day to read and process emails

For the most part, emails are a distraction so check emails only after you do your most important task of the day. Decide on one or two other times to process emails, maybe around lunch time and then just before you leave the office. Take charge tip while youre getting into the habit, make an appointment with yourself two or three times a day to process email.

3. Delete junk mail immediately

Junk mail is anything you have not signed up for and includes chain letters, petitions, solicitations, scams, etc. Take charge tip before deleting, right click the email, click Junk Mail and then add the sender to your Blocked Senders list.

4. Process email using the two-minute rule

Discipline yourself to action anything if it can be done in two minutes or less. I cut down my email processing time by 30 minutes a day just by doing this one thing! If you have to forward an email to someone, do it there and then. If you quickly need to change someones address in Contacts, drag the email to the Contacts button and release. It opens up the contact and you can save changes and then delete the email.

5. Identify the next action

Even if you cant completely process the email in two minutes, at least identify the next action. If you have to phone someone to discuss the email, use the subject line to write your next action step before dragging it into a subfolder, e.g. asian adult chat to Michelle, write report, etc. Then save. Now the next time you look at that message, you know exactly what to do.

6. Make folders

Most people dont use folders correctly. You dont make individual folders just to drag all the contents of your inbox into these folders. First of all, limit the number of folders and second, have meaningful folders like @Follow up, @To read, @To phone, etc. The @ sign in the front means that I have to action those folders. In my schedule, I have time blocked out to do some phoning, following up, reading, etc.

7. Set up rules

Even if you cant completely process the email in two minutes, at least identify the next action.

Go to Tools, and under Organize, you can set up rules to send emails automatically from certain senders to specific folders. I use this function for all personal emails.

Take charge tip you can make a folder called To read and set up a rule to send all your newsletters directly to this folder.

The main thing to realise is that your inbox is not a place to store your e-junk and that with a system, you too can manage your inbox.

Al Prodgers Stand Up Comedy Video - The Sweat And Tears Years

Al Prodgers stand up comedy video - the sweat and tears years! To make Al Prodgers stand up comedy dvd Of course I'll still respect you in the morning was an act of persistence and love, but that was only the beginning!

What I thought would be the hardest part, turned out to be relatively easy. Making the movie, challenged me on many levels. Add to that the fact that we had another baby, moved house and somehow, I still had to find time for my regular job in-between all of this. I was stretched pretty thin for a while there, but that passed. Finally, after much sweating and toiling, I had created a full length stand up comedy video. What distribution company would not want this classic piece of bootleg film making? They where going to be fighting each other with sticks to get my business, or so I thought.

Full of enthusiasm and excitement, I set about making beautifully packaged samples of our stand up comedy dvd. I called every film distributor in this town and some others. I drove about and personally delivered copies to distributors. I packaged and couriered copies to distributors. I phoned those same distributors, oh how I phoned them! And phoned and phoned I suppose I must give credit where credit is due; one distributor actually watched the movie and called me back to say it wasnt really the kind of movie they distribute. I cant say if they where being diplomatic of honest, Im too personally involved.

One thing you must understand, when you edit a movie, you go through the movie frame by frame, over and over. During the process you become very well acquainted with the footage. But even so, very often I would sit back to preview a section that I had been working on and laugh! I laughed again and again at the movie. When it was finished and I showed it to some friends, I laughed at Als comedy some more. Theres only one conclusion, this is a very funny movie. Something that has to be shared and the only thing that can make that possible, is love. And I do love this movie, strange as that sounds. I knew I had to do something myself, but what exactly?

I could not shake the feeling that the internet was the way to go; so I embarked on a learning curve second to none. I learnt about the internet, websites and lots, lots more. I found the internet to be an endless source of information. Anything and everything is available, and then some more too! It was only four months, but it felt like a lifetime. It required every ounce of persistence I had, a real labour of love. I was challenged again and again, but I eventually managed to create my own website to sell my movie, as an instant download. (I created two other internet businesses at the same time, so you understand why I was so busy.) Its brilliant, stand up comedy on-line, pay to download movies; its the future for sure! I know that I am sick of being told by the networks what to watch on telly. So here is the alternative. More and more movies are becoming available as downloads, thanks to faster internet connections. Now we can choose what to watch, we dont have to watch whatever is on telly tonight, again!

So, after years (one and a half) of sweat and tears, it is ready to be shared. I could not put my finger on it but something still had to be done. But what more could I do? My life, erm wife, suggested that the last thing I had to do was let go! Sometimes she can be frustratingly cryptic, but always chillingly accurate. So tonight I sat down, after the kids where in bed, and popped our movie Of course Ill still respect you in the morning into the dvd player. I sat back with a cup of tea and watched my movie. The laugher started in my toes and ended at the top of my skull, it shook me all over and left me with the standard silly grin one has on after this movie. And I knew that all I had to do was write down these feelings and send them out, with a silly grin attached (I choose via the internet, she probably had something more ethereal in mind:), to the universe. And thats how people would come to know about our brilliant movie! If youve gotten this far, you have to come watch the free samples on my site, IndeContent!
