One of my favorite all-time movies is "The Long Kiss Goodnight." It was one of the first action/suspense movies I had seen where the female was the main character. Geena Davis starred as an assassin for the CIA. As I met Skye Mathews in Deception's Guard, the first book in the Deception series by Jacqueline G. Randolph, I was reminded of my delight in having the female as the lead in an action-packed thriller!

In Deception's Guard, Skye is a top Drug Enforcement agent working undercover. She is called back from her primary assignment to become the bodyguard for CEO Rhys Wielde, who has agreed to work with the DEA. Just as with the character played by Geena Davis, readers will quickly come to admire Skye's courage, strength and commitment, while maintaining an underlying warmth and concern for those she serves and protects.

Rhys had been shocked when, after extensive research and elimination of his possible involvement, he was contacted by the DEA, regarding his company, Genoreach. They had determined that his company was responsible for the creation of a genetic receptor, code-named Omega, for all known illegal drugs. That is, the receptor was designed to annihilate the biological receptors in the brain responsible for addiction and necessary for withdrawal and rehabilitation. The destroyed receptors would be replaced by artificial receptors incapable of purging drugs, thus ensuring a captive market for drug smugglers! Rhys had created Genoreach shortly after graduating from MIT. He had considered the small group of employees as his family and felt bitter betrayal and anger that one or more of them had not only turned against the goals of the company, but had worked to create something so monstrous and deadly. Once he was convinced his company was involved, he agreed to help bring these traitors to justice. That placed him in immediate danger from those who had first contacted his company representatives.

While Skye was a long-term, experienced agent, she had learned through that experience that oftentimes men did not accept a woman as a bodyguard. Instead, it was instinctual for them to try to protect the female in times of trouble. Skye surmised that Rhys Wielde would follow that role. So, while she had agreed to become his bodyguard, it was to be done without Rhys ever meeting her. However, as she and other agents surrounded Rhys in a hideaway cabin, and a car drove slowly by without his knowledge, Skye realized that she would have to be closer if she were actually going to be able to protect him. Skye's plan was to meet him in disguise, as Sierra, and have him become interested in her, so that he would invite her to spend time in his company. The plan worked-very well. Unfortunately, the plan worked on Skye as well... Their attraction was instant...and real. But Skye is able to maintain control of her passion and, within Rhys' arms as he kisses her, she plunges a syringe deep into his neck. As arranged, she pulls him into a hiding place; then crawls in, guns in both hands now, to protect him if necessary. She nervously listens, sweat pouring down her face, as those wanting to kill Rhys attack the cabin, and as her team fights against the assassins.

When Rhys regains consciousness, the battle is over; Sierra is gone! But the first phase of the Omega operation is a success and they arrest the chief biologist and two information system programmers of Genoreach, along with a number of South American mercenaries. Now they must turn their efforts to those who initiated the research. Just as the mercenaries gave up the Genoreach contacts, Rhys is permitted to shake information out of his former colleagues. He discovers that they were to make contact at an industrial conference in Peru. Since Rhys had already been scheduled for attendance, he readily agrees to act as the promised systems analyst who would release the data and receive payment from the drug lords. Although fearful of her own feelings, Skye is again asked to act as his bodyguard and Gabe, her boss and friend, has arranged for her to be disguised as a haggard domestic worker in the capitol mansion.

With various disguises, Skye is able to handle many of the activities necessary to the mission. However, as the Haggard is called upon to guide him from danger and they must abandon their disguises to escape, Rhys unhappily discovers how the various characters Skye has played have fooled him. Is the woman for whom he has such attraction, Sierra, Skye, or the domestic worker-or some other woman he has not yet met? Rhys finally accepts and applauds that Skye is able to guard him. But, by the time they are nearing the end of their mission, and they are under attack, Rhys does exactly what Skye was afraid of-he takes the bullet that she should have taken and is badly injured.

Deception's Guard has constant action and twists, setting a pace that keeps the reader interested and involved. Jacqueline Randolph has used knowledge gathered through extensive traveling as well as her excellent writing skills to introduce wonderful characters whom you will quickly come to know and love. Then she takes us through a wonderful and exciting adventure in faraway lands of intrigue. You might plan on buying the second in her series, Deception's Fury, at the same time. I read both books in two days, reading almost around the clock-plan to meet Skye and Rhys on Friday night and have a wonderful, exciting weekend! Trust me! This author is on the move! Watch her! She is a challenge to J. D. Robb and many other well-established writers. This is definitely a MUST-READ!

Those who remember and enjoyed the original series for Mission Impossible will certainly welcome Deception's Fury, by Jacqueline G. Randolph. In fact, you will see that this story would have made a great script for that popular show. Fury is an exciting adventure that reveals a world known by few-a world where undercover Americans fight as part of the Drug Enforcement Agency to protect our citizens, demanding of themselves a commitment and loyalty to their mission that can only serve to inspire and amaze us.

While this story may be fiction, it, nonetheless, elicits a response-a thankful, prayerful elation that there are those among our fellow Americans who work to serve and protect our United States.But, wait! Before you read further, let me tell you that you will want to start right from the beginning of this series. Check out my review of Deception's Guard because I believe you'll want to read about the great love affair and the dangerous adventures of the two main characters before you are submerged into the Fury of the greatest challenge to that love in Randolph's second book!

Yes, Deception's Fury continues the story of the love affair between Rhys and Skye Wielde. Skye has moved from her position as a Drug Enforcement Agent into an advisory position and has become Rhys' wife and the mother of three beautiful children--a set of twins, and later a young son. She is also a part-time professor and has established a local air charter business, sometimes working as one of the pilots.

Rhys is head of Genoreach Technologies which is dedicated to research and development of bioinformatic technologies-the mating of biology and information systems. A major deception at Genoreach had originally brought Rhys and Skye together (See Deception's Guard) and nearly ten years of wedded bliss have passed.Until the day that messages were intercepted. Information that referred to their youngest son, who was called "Wolf," had been discovered on the Internet. There are also references to Omega, the drug that had been created at Genoreach and had been found to be deadly. Had the drug not totally been stopped? Or had other scientists duplicated the process? And what did it mean to have the involved ship, the ship that was known to transport drugs, have the same name as their son, with a captain who was called "Wolf"?

A local woman who is an undercover agent has been able to convince the assigned guards that a doctor's visit is needed. Skye is known to be a master of disguises but now it is Rhys' turn and he is disguised as an elderly doctor by night while by day he holds a position as an embassy aide. The old woman meets Rhys, as the doctor, and brings him to Skye. She has been beaten and bruised over her entire body, chunks of her neck and face are gone-eaten by rats. She is covered and smells of her own excrement. The horror of seeing her is almost too much for Rhys to bear. But little by little, he is convinced that his wife recognizes him and is able to respond to help his efforts to save her.

Once Skye is saved and well enough to act on her own, she is once again driven and, against her husband's wishes to go home, is relentless in her determination to finish the mission. Reluctantly, Rhys agrees to stay and help the team find the ship transporting the drugs. The trail takes them to Ecuador, Buenos Aries, and finally to the Antarctica, the coldest most uninhabitable place on earth. There, putting together all of the pieces of information she has gathered, Skye locates the ship--the ship which some claim to be a ghost ship because of its mysterious appearances and disappearances.But there is talk among the DEA team and bosses of Skye's sanity . . . of her becoming a rogue agent. Skye knows that in addition to her assigned mission, she has a personal need-to seek ex-girlfriend revenge on the murderer of her former DEA partner-and she doesn't mind questions about her sanity as long as she is able to fulfill that quest as well as find the ship. Rhys is there when she finds the location and is the only witness to a major shift from team plans, which support the possibility she is indeed a traitor. Deception's Fury is indeed a love story, but that story is just a major underlying theme. The character of Skye is a major force, an individual who, in disguise, easily becomes a person who moves through the underworld of drugs and prostitution--with its many dangers--to overhear, discover and piece together where her target can be found and how to get to it. Needless to say, the suspense and intrigue is heavy; the methods and actions of the team and undercover agents are frightening. What they must do to stay alive can only be considered monstrous and yet a very necessary part of survival. With a surprise ending, readers are kept in suspense right to the ending!

Randolph has outdone many major writers in the creation of her two main characters and, especially, her female lead. Skye will become one of your all-time favorite characters!

The tone and scenes bring readers into a distressing world and forces them to read on until the heroine allows them to leave...at the end of the book. Her writing is superb, the characters will become your heroes, and you will be searching for the next book in the series long before it is available. Trust me! This author is on the move! Watch her! She is a challenge to J. D. Robb, with her husband/wife team, as well as many other well-established writers. This is definitely a MUST-READ!

Deception's Legacy By Jacqueline G. Randolph

Randolph's latest book in her "Deception" series, Deception's Legacy, is a stunning complementary addition! In fact, in many ways, it surpasses her first two books, Deception's Guard and Deception's Fury, in this reviewer's opinion. And that is saying something!

In addition to action-packed adventure, Deception's Legacy, brings us significant historical information and a major surprise in the life of one of our main characters, Skye, who, even in her 70s is actively involved in her family and in her former career as a DEA agent. Set in two primary time periods-1966 and 2030-the story also takes readers back to the time of the Spanish Inquisition. And there is where I would like to begin in sharing the story.

Evil people use whatever they can to justify hatred and prejudice. During the Spanish Inquisition, which was instigated by Queen Isabella and sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, in 1483, theft, torture, and murder were routinely committed against all those in Spain whose only crime was that their faith and belief was not sanctioned by the Catholic Church! In Palomares, Spain, these outrages were planned and executed by "Don Cristobal," which represented both a family as well as the nobility who held the title at any given time. These men were thrilled to use religion to cover their lusts and they were quite willing to choose Marranos--Jews and Muslims especially--as their victims. Each generation excitedly considered how to "improve" and "surpass" the atrocities of the previous Don Cristobal. Using this background, Randolph moves between 1966 and 2030, presenting two exciting storylines, separately but ultimately connected in an explosive confrontation that is truly unforgettable! Jim, a training instructor, was commanded to fill a last-minute staffing problem and fly as standby pilot on a nuclear airlift mission-Chrome Dome. In 1966 the last missions were flown which carried nuclear bombs over Palomares, Spain. This novel recounts the horrific nuclear accident that occurred during the ill-fated mid-air refueling. But there in the midst of tragedy, a wondrous love story began.

Rosita had found Jim after he had parachuted/crashed; using that parachute, she was able to finally pull him into a cave in which she had been hiding. When Jim finally awoke, dazed, he saw her-she was bruised and bleeding, almost as badly hurt as he was. His first thought was that one of the nuclear bombs had exploded and it was already too late-she was evidence of what had happened. Rosita cradled the black man in her arms. She did not know that Jim was one of the few African-American pilots; all she knew was that he was hurt and she tried to comfort him. As time passed, a young boy, Rosita's friend, came to bring food to her. Finding the stranger, he stayed and when the man awoke, he used what little English he knew to try to communicate. The nuclear bombs had not exploded; Don Cristobal, to whom she belonged, had hurt Rosita. She was pregnant, her third, for Rosita was a Marrano, and Don Cristobal could not allow another Marrano to be born, so he would beat her until each baby died! He was looking forward to killing her third child, still joyously following the commands established so long ago. Rosita had escaped to protect her baby.

Jim knew, however, that neither he nor Rosita would live if they didn't get help. Finally, he was able to make Rosita understand that she must go for help; he sent her with evidence of his existence and she looked until she finally found the one other black man who was stationed in Spain, thinking that would be who would help them. Knowing that Rosita would be killed if he didn't further help her, Jim claimed that Rosita was his wife and that she was carrying his child. What appeared to them to be a miracle resulted in Rosita later being on the plane that was carrying Jim back to the States. Decades passed before how they escaped was revealed-what a story!

Although Skye had tried to dissuade him, her son Tristan had followed in her footsteps and joined the DEA. In 2030, Tristan was assigned to Spain and was quickly immersed in a major effort to trace drug smuggling activities. The assignment required Tristan's search of the ruling Don Cristobal's castle. There he found the hideous evidence of what these men had done, and were still doing, in the name of the Catholic Church. Unbelievable perversions had been documented--each generation trying to be more heinous than the one before! Now they were using drugs as one of the latest methods by which Marranos were murdered. Now they were not really too careful whether it was just Marranos that were affected!

Tristan encounters include fun impersonations, exciting near-death experiences (when his parents come to his rescue) and, finally, in his finding his own soul mate. Surprise after surprise keeps the reader turning pages, striving to keep up with what is being revealed! There is NO way I'm going to even hint at what happens at the end!

Needless to say, Randolph gets better and better! Her third novel in the Deception series is excitingly new and historically significant. Randolph continues as one of my favorite and MUST-READ authors. If this book sounds interesting, trust me...get the first two books and start at the beginning of this unique family saga!

The Intersection of Family Law and Criminal Law in Rhode Island - Untangling the Web!

The intersection between family law, criminal law and divorce in RI

Overview

A Rhode Island criminal domestic misdemeanor or felony case is often intertwined with complex issues concerning family law, child custody, child support, visitation, restraining orders and divorce. A Rhode Island Family law case is often intertwined with criminal law issues. In some cases there are three cases or more proceeding at the same time: a criminal case, a complaint protection from abuse and a divorce. There also may be a dcyf, child support case, paternity proceeding or juvenile proceeding pending. This article applies to misdemeanor criminal charges.

A misdemeanor is considered domestic if it involves certain family member, a spouse, ex-girlfriend revenge or boyfriend. An assault, disorderly conduct, larceny and other criminal charges can all be charged as domestic offenses. Therefore, if there is a domestic violence component to an assault case, the case will be charged as a domestic assault rather than just an assault.

In the event that a person is charged with a domestic offense, a no contact order will issue. The No Contact order will preclude the accused from having any contact with the victim, his or her spouse or significant other.

A no contact order often reeks havok upon the family unit especially when the parties are married or have children. The police will remove the accused from his or her residence. This removal creates a whole new set of challenges for the family. In many instances, the accused is the sole support for the family. Also, there are often visitation issues that arise immediately. The accused often wants to visit his or her children.

The victim usually has her own opinions which may or may not include the desire for the accused to visit with the children. Furthermore, the accused often has the need and desire to obtain his or her personal belongings such as clothes, toiletries, tools, work items etc.Also, the victim may seek another restraining order from the family Court or District Court and may seek child support.

This article addresses the above mentioned complex issues and answers the following questions:

Should I get a Rhode Island Criminal lawyer or Divorce lawyer to represent me in a criminal law or divorce case in Rhode Island?

An attorney is needed but not required. The old adage is that a person who acts as their own attorney has a fool for a client. Lawyers / attorneys are familiar with the legal process, the law , the judges and the legal system. In a criminal case you have a right to a free criminal lawyer from the Public Defender if you meet the income and eligibility requirements.

What is the difference between a domestic offense and a non domestic offense?

Any offense which is charged as a domestic offense is more serious than the same charge charged as a non domestic offense. Under Rhode Island (RI) law, a person who is found guilty of a domestic offense or who takes a nolo contendere plea with a sentence of filing, probation or suspended sentence must take batterers intervention classes. If found guilty of a domestic offense or if there is a plea bargain then a no contact order will enter automatically unless the victim is able to drop the no contact order.

A second conviction for a domestic offense in Rhode Island may lead to a minimum ten days at the aci! A third conviction for a domestic offense may be charged as a felony. Keep in mind that not all plea agreements constitute a criminal conviction. In RI any sentence with a suspended sentence, guilty finding, plea of guilty, fine or period of incarceration constitutes a criminal conviction. A nolo contendere plea with probation or filing with court costs does not constitute a conviction in Rhode island! A domestic conviction also will looks worse then a non domestic conviction on the accused's record when seeking employment opportunities.

Also, sentencing is usually more harsh for domestic cases then a non domestic offense. Furthermore, in domestic cases a one year filing cannot be expunged at the end of the year. There is an additional two year waiting period to expunge a domestic filing. Upon entering a plea or being found guilty of a crime with domestic implications then the defendant will be ordered to complete a batterer's intervention program which involves attending classes. The defendant can also be ordered to pay restitution to the victim if applicable and obtain substance abuse or mental health counseling. Failure to attend the Batterers classes, failure to pay restitution or failure to attend counseling could be considered a violation of probation, suspended sentence or a filing.

What is a no contact order?

In Rhode Island, A "no contact order" means that the defendant is precluded from having any contact and or communication with the victim or the person under the protection of the no contact order. This includes but is not limited to letters, emails, text messages or messages delivered through a third party.

In other words if a person is under a no contact order and sees the victim in public they must leave the area immediately and not acknowledge the victims existence. A person cannot even say "hi" if they walk by the victim by chance on the street.

A person can be arrested under Rhode Island law for violating a no contact order even if the victim initiates the contact and calls the defendant. A person can be charged with breaking a no contact order even if invited by his wife to come back to the marital home.

Dropping / dismissing the no contact order

The police cannot drop a no contact order. Only a judge can drop a no contact order. The victim can attempt to drop the no contact order at the arraignment. Prior to approaching the judge at the arraignment, the victim must speak with the domestic violence counselor at Court. The judge may dismiss the no contact order at the arraignment.

However, in the event that the alleged abuse is severe or there is a documented history of abuse then the judge may refuse to drop the no contact order. The no contact order may not be dropped by the judge if the victim states that she is still afraid of the accused. It is much easier to drop the no contact order at the pretrial hearing then it is to drop it at the arraignment. Some judges are hesitant to drop the no contact order at the arraignment. The judge will typically ask the police who are present at the arraignment whether they have any objections to the no contact order being dropped

Can the victim dismiss the no contact order after the arraignment but before the pretrial conference?

In the event that the victim wants to drop the no contact order after the arraignment but before the pretrial the victim can go to the clerk and ask that the file be brought in front of the judge. After conferring with the domestic advocate the judge will rule on whether the no contact order will be dropped.

Can the no contact order be dropped at the pretrial conference?

The victim who wants to cancel the no contact order will have another opporunity at the pretrial conference. The pretrial conference is typically scheduled a couple of weeks after the arraignment. At the pretrial conference, the victim can approach the judge and again seek to have the no contact order dropped

Will the criminal judge in District Court resolve visitation or custody issues?

No.

The criminal Court will not get involved in any family related issues such as child custody, child support, alimony ,paternity, relocation out of state, equitable division of marital property, visitation, payment of marital bills, payment of mortgage, payment of credit cards, disposition of the marital real estate, etc. Those issues are the province of the Rhode Island Family Court not the District court !The District Court is where criminal misdemeanor cases are heard.

The Court has the power to order restitution to the victim for any actual damages suffered by the victim as a result of the crime such as destruction of property, medical bills, stolen funds etc.

The District Court in a criminal case cannot be involved in setting visitation or dealing with issues concerning divorce or custody of the minor children. The Rhode Island Family Court is the proper Forum for dealing with issues related to divorce and child custody such as: child support, visitation, financial restraining orders and issues concerning marital property, marital real estate and debt.

Obtaining personal belongings (property) when there is a no contact order.

There are several proper ways for an accused to obtain his / her personal belongings when there is a no contact order in effect. Personal belongings usually consists of personal property such as clothes, sneakers, uniforms, personal effects etc. The accused can contact the police department where the victim resides and seek to make arrangements to pick up personal belongings. The police will often escort the person to the home. The downside of this arrangement is that the police often are in a rush and enforce a severe draconian time limit.

If the accused has a private attorney, he can contact the victims attorney who can contact the victim to make arrangements . This can have its pitfalls because the victim may be hostile or the victim may have no interest in negotiating

The accused can attempt to arrange to get his belongings through a third party. The accused must be careful not to violate the no contact order.

When does a no contact order in Rhode Island (RI) expire?

A no contact order expires when the sentence period is finished. A no contact order also expires if the case is dismissed or the defendant is found not guilty. The no contact order expires if the judge terminates the no contact order at the request of the victim.

Be careful because there may also be another restraining order issued as a result of a divorce or Family Court matter or a District Court restraining order!

What happens if a person on bail, probation, filing or suspended sentence violates a no contact order?

A person who is on probation, bail or a probation attached to a suspended sentence must be even more vigilante in order to not violate the no contact order.

A violation of a no contact order is a crime in itself which is also a violation of the conditions of probation, filing or bail . A person on probation or bail can be held at the ACI if they are accused of violating a no-contact order. For example, if a person is on probation or bail, a single phone call made by the defendant to a victim under the protection of a no contact order probably means a minimum of ten 10 days in jail at the ACI.

A probationary period or filing period is a time of great risk for a defendant and a defendant must be careful to stay out of trouble! A person must be even more vigilant if there is a no contact order, order protection from Abuse from The Rhode Island Family Court or restraining order in effect. A violation of a no contact order or a Family Court restraining order is a violation of probation.

A person with a suspended or stayed sentence faces the most potential risk regarding violation of probation in RI. As a result of a probation violation of violating a no contact order, a person with a suspended sentence could be ordered to serve the remainder of the suspended sentence at the adult correctional institution (ACI)

For Example, a person with probation may get themselves deeper into trouble when they resume communications or contact with their wife or ex-girlfriend revenge despite the fact that a no contact order is in effect. If there is an argument or allegations of domestic assault or abuse, the police may arrest the person and hold him/her at the aci as a probation violator as well as new charges for domestic assault and violation of a no contact order or restraining order.

Rhode Island Family Court restraining orders: (1) Complaints Protection from Abuse and (2) 'Civil restraining orders' and how they relate to criminal law

A defendant must Be careful! There may be a separate order protection from abuse restraining order that issued from Rhode Island Family Court as a result of a complaint protection from abuse. The Family Court has jurisdiction to issue an order protection from abuse restraining orders for up to three (3) years. The Family Court can issue restraining orders for persons who are married, are divorced, are family members or who have children in common as well as other jurisdiction set forth in the statute. There may also be a restraining order issued by a Court of another state or another Court

A protection from abuse case is not a criminal case. Violation of Family Court Complaint protection from Abuse restraining order is a crime in itself and also may constitute a violation of probation, bail and violation of conditions of a filing.

There are two types of Family Court restraining orders, "Complaint Protection from Abuse" and a civil restraining order. Both of these types of Restraining orders can be in addition to divorce proceedings.

Is Violating a Family Court restraining order which is not an order protection from abuse a crime?

No. A violation of a Family Court restraining order which is not a Complaint Protection from Abuse is not a crime. Violation of this type of order is punishable by contempt. However, If the restraining order contains language that violation of the order is a crime then there might be criminal implications.

Guide to Bassano del Grappa, Northern Italy

Unique Points

Bassano sits in a stunning location by the River Brenta with
Monte Grappa in the background. It is about 35 kilometres
north east of Vicenza. The town's symbols are said to be the
Palladian bridge, white asparagus, ceramics and the
Grappa liqueur. I visited the town for the day in February
2005. I really liked the location, the fresh air, the fast flowing
river and the picturesque bridge. If you like to be slightly off
the tourist track and would prefer a more rural setting for
short break or as a base for a touring holiday, Bassano is
ideal.

How to get there

The nearest airports are Treviso, used by Ryanair as it's
airport for Venice and Venice Marco Polo. You could hire a
car from the airport. It is possible to reach Bassano by train
on the Vicenzia - Trento or Padova - Bassano lines.

History

It is often assumed that the city takes its name from the
well known liqueur Grappa. This is not the case; it is named
after Monte Grappa. The mountain's name is said to
originate from crapp or greep, meaning crag in an ancient
pre-Latin language. The liqueur Grappa's name stems
from grappolo, meaning a cluster of grapes.

Grappa liqueur has been produced in Bassano since 1779
when Bortolo Nardini bought a Grapperia on the Brenta
River bank. Grappa is made from the by-products of wine
making, the seeds, stems and skins. The company is still
run by members of the Nardini family, accounting for around
one quarter of annual grappa production.

Ponte Vecchia has become synonymous with Bassano.
The bridge is first mentioned in the 11th century. The bridge
has been rebuilt several times due to flooding or
destruction during wars. It is still the original design by
Palladio from 1569. The bridge is built of wood, making it
more resilient to the fast flowing River Brenta.

There is a record of the city on St Mary's Hill from the 10th
century. From the 14th to 18th century the city was under
Venetian rule. It became well known for the manufacture of
ceramics, wool, silk, iron and copper. The Remondini
family ran one of the most up to date printing houses in
Europe from the17th to the 19th century.

Grappa liqueur has been produced in Bassano since 1779
when Bortolo Nardini bought a Grapperia on theBrenta
River bank. Grappa is made from the by products of wine
making, the seeds, stems and skins. The company is still
run by members of the Nardini family, accounting for around
one quarter of annual grappa production.

The Town Hall was first constructed in1405. Bartolomeo
Ferranci installed the present clock mechanism in 1743.
The interior walls are adorned by frescoes of 120 coats of
arms.

White asparagus was first produced in the 16th century after
Bassano experienced a hailstorm which destroyed the
asparagus crop. The farmers dug up the part of the plant
below the earth and discovered that it was so tender and
delicious that they started to grow it underground
permanently.

Parolini, a local nobleman, designed the Giardini Parolini in
the early 19th century. In 1829 Parolini catalogued 3000
plant species in the garden.

During the First World War the Italians took a last stand
against the Austrians in Monte Grappa where they
entrenched themselves in tunnels and bunkers to repel the
Austrian attackers. Over 12,000 Italian and 10,000 Austrian
soldiers lost their lives in the numerous battles.

During the Second World War Italian partisans hid in Monte
Grappa, organising raids on the main supply route from
Germany to the German troops stationed in Italy. In 1944
the Germans took ex-girlfriend revenge by marching up the mountain
behind women, children and elderly local inhabitants. Any
partisans discovered or civilians suspected of assisting
partisans were killed. There were public hangings and
shootings with families forced to watch.

In 1946 the Italian prime minister awarded Basssano the
gold medal for military valour. Every year the city
commemorates these events during September.

The Museo degli Alpini was established in 1948 in memory
of the Italian Alpine Troops It is located on the eastern side
of the Ponte Vecchio. You have to enter it through a cafe. I
found this rather confusing but the museum is down stairs
to the left when you enter the cafe.
Originally the collection was very small but has grown as
more war relics have been gathered together. There are
many original photos, uniforms and armoury.

Museo della Cermica is near the eastern side of the Ponte
Vecchio. The building was constructed as the residence of
Ferrari family, owners of a local silk factory. The entrance
hall is adorned with a fresco by Giorgio Anseli. There are
pieces of engraved ceramics from medieval times, Mainardi
majolica pieces from the 17th and 18th century, along with
modern pieces.

The Civic Musuem is one of the oldest in the Veneto region.
It was built in1828 on the site of the convent of St Francis. It
houses a collection of paintings by the Da Ponti family,
Guariento and Magnasco, a collection of prints by the
Remondini family. There is also an archaeological section
and pieces by Antonio Canova.

Bassano boasts several churches. San Donato was built in
1208. It is claimed that St Francis of Assisi and St Anthony
of Padua both stayed here during the third decade of the
13th century. The church was a hospital, run by Benedictine
nuns in the 14th century, then a Fransican monastery during
the 15th century. The church was restored in 1900,
including work being done on the cell which was used by
the two saints.

The Church of San Francesco was started in the mid 12th
century, after the return of Ezzelino 11, the Stutterer, from the
Holy Land. The Church of St John the Baptist was originally
built in 1308 but reconstructed in the 18th century by local
architect Giovanni Miazzi. Giambattista Piazzetti made the
altarpiece of John the Baptist and Orzio Marinali created the
statues of angels and the bas-reliefs.

The Cathedral of Holy Mary was a 10th century parish
church in the original high part of the town. The present
cathedral dates from the 17th century. The high altar piece
and the painting of St Stephen are the work of Leandro di
Ponte, and the sculptures are by Mainali. Di Giacomo Dacci
made the organ and the three ceiling paintings are by
Volpata.

selection of Italian, Tyrolean and Austrian dishes, via

Day trips

Marostica

Marostica is a 14th century medieval town where the
original town wall stands intact.
It is best known as the "town of chess". Every second year a
match, with people dressed in elaborate costumes to
portray the pieces, is played on the giant chessboard below
the castle. This takes place on the second Friday, Saturday
and Sunday every second year, when the year ends in an
even number. This commemorates the chess match
played in 1454 when the victor was to win the hand in
marriage of Lianora, the daughter of the Lord of the Castle
of Marostica. Two suitors, Rinaldo d'Angarano and Vieti da
Vallonara, had fallen in love with Lianora and were to fight a
duel to see how would marry Lianora. The Lord forbade the
duel and order decreed that the victor of the chess match
would marry Lianora. However all was not lost for the
defeated suitor, as he would marry Lianora's younger sister,
Oldrata.
The period costumes are permanenly displayed in the
Lower Castle.

Marostica holds a Cherry Festival every year during May and
June. There are kiosks in the streets selling a variety of
cherries including morello, roame,marostagne and sander.
There is an annual exhibition of comic cartoons in the town.
Every July and August local craftsmen display their work the
exhibition hall of the Lower Caste.
There are some lovely walks through the surrounding hills.

Asola

Asola is a charming hilltop town, with a castle, a cathedral
with a altar piece by Lorenzo Lotto and the 15th century
Palazzo della Ragione. It was called the "city of one
thousand horizons" by Giosue Carducci, because of all the
fantastic views. It was much favoured by the Venetian
nobility. Caterina Corona, the former Queen of Cyprus, lived
here in the late 15th century. Robert Browning, the English
poet, bought a house ere in the mid 17th century. Eleanora
Duse, credited with being the greatest actress of the Italian
stage was also a resident. The travel writer Freya Stark was
brought up in Asolo and spent a lot of time here between
her various expeditions. There is an antiques market every
second weekend of the month, except during July and
August.
